Hiiiii! I just got back from Palm Springs and am off to Mexico later this week! Lots of exciting stuff – I haven’t taken a big trip since Thailand (trip recaps here and here) and have been itching to travel. Oh, and if you haven’t already, feel free to add me on Snapchat to follow along: amylzhang. Now, moving on to talking about summer dresses…

I’ve always been more of a dress/skirt kind of gal over pants, especially in the summer when the ideal outfit is something lightweight and breathable. See some of my previous posts on dresses (boho maxis, wrap dresses here and here, and off the shoulder frocks) for some options.

As much as I love maxis, a good mini dress (remember this Jen’s Pirate Booty dress??) is the way to go when the temperatures rise. Some of my favorite options for summer dresses include:

The Little White Dress (LWD)

I would choose an all white ensemble over all black any day, especially in the summer when you’re rocking a tan (real or fake). Bright white is my absolute favorite color to wear, the only downside is many pieces end up having to go to the dry cleaners often. The key is to choose fabrics that are easily washable, if you go with materials that need to be dry cleaned such as silk, it’s best to be very careful when you’re out and about!

Cut Outs

My preferred way to show just a little skin. Showing some skin is totally acceptable in summer dresses. I like cutouts that are subtle, backless anything is a yes in my book as well. This dress is another steal from the Reformation sample sale that I loved so much, I actually got in two colors. Speaking of which, I’m totally obsessed with sample sales now.

Slip Dresses

Slip dresses still get my vote for versatile, effortless piece you need in your closet (remember this velvet number?) Wear it on its own, over a bralette (or even better, a chain bra!) or layer it over a T-shirt. The options are surprisingly endless. Go for silky or velvety slip dresses, you may look like you just rolled out of bed, but in the best way possible.

Dressing for the office is oh so tricky in the summer.

Even if it’s 90 degrees outside, chances are your office is blasting the air conditioning and you’re probably freezing. This is the perpetual dilemma for pretty much even woman I know who works in an office. Some real solutions involve leaving a warm jacket or blanket at the office, or even bringing in your own space heater. An ideal outfit for warm days and cold offices is a midi dress – stylish enough to wear to happy hour but also work appropriate for your office dress code (just be sure to layer if you get cold!). One of my favorites this summer has been this purple printed midi dress from Astr the Label  (< if you haven’t checked out this brand yet be sure to – I love their midi/maxi dresses and casual summer tops). If you’re looking for some inspiration for summer office style, look no further!

Summer Midi Dresses Perfect for the Office

+ LoveShackFancy Rebecca Midi Dress – LoveShackFancy has consistently been one of my favorite brands this year. I love their feminine and romantic styles, every one makes me feel like I’m going to a tea party (in the best way possible). Their email newsletters are beautifully styled as well, and one of the few brand emails I actually look forward to receiving and opening.

+ MISA Rania Midi Dress – I love the details on this dress. Florals, ruffles, a high neck. Elegant yet playful.

+ Reformation Mary Dress – the epitome of hot girl summer in a midi dress form. Yes, it’s animal print – but don’t fear, it’s still appropriate for the office layered a chic blazer on top.

+ Ulla Johnson Aliya Dress – bohemian office style at its finest. If you’re looking to add modern yet bohemian style clothing to your wardrobe, look no further than Ulla Johnson. The dresses are loose and flowy, but you don’t end up looking like a shapeless sack of potatoes.

+ Keepsake Passion Midi Dress – if you’re not afraid of prints, opt for this polka dot midi dress from Keepsake. The fabric is lightweight so you can walk outside and still feel cool.

It’s almost September, and wedding season is still going strong. We got home from the most beautiful wedding in Northern California. Also, have another wedding to attend in a couple of weeks to round out this wedding season. 2022 saw a record number of weddings in recent history. And, it appears the wedding rush won’t be slowing down anytime soon!

Fall 2022 Wedding Guest Dresses

As a guest, the number one question is usually around what to wear and how to interpret the dress code. I really loved the dress I wore this past weekend. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten so many compliments on a dress I’ve worn as a guest. It also comes in white for my future brides to be! I wanted to share some of my tips for wedding guest attire and favorite wedding guest dress picks for any upcoming fall weddings.

What to Wear to a Fall Wedding

What to wear to a fall wedding depends on two factors – the wedding location and dress code. In many parts of the country (and around the world), early fall is some of the best weather of the year. Days are often still warm (but not blisteringly hot like the summertime) and evenings are briskly cool. Regarding wedding attire – you can get away with long sleeved cocktail or formal dresses. You can also choose darker gem hues in the fall. Always make sure to check the weather and wedding dress code that is typically found on the invitation or wedding website.

Cocktail / Semi-Formal Attire

Cocktail or semi-formal wedding events are slightly less formal. You can get away with shorter dresses or even a jumpsuit. I’ve included some of my favorite cocktail and semi formal wedding guest dresses below. I usually buy my dresses from Revolve (thank you, 2 day shipping!) or Reformation (they have the best selection!), but also love to look for a good deal. For fall I love darker florals, long sleeved dresses, and jewel/autumn tones (think: sage, plum, burnt orange, navy, hunter green).

Black Tie / Formal Attire

For black tie or formal dress code weddings, I would stick to a similar color palette. This will vary though based on where the wedding is and the weather of the current locale! Also, make sure to choose a floor length dress. I love these options below!

If you aren’t looking to buy a dress, my go-tos for renting are either Rent the Runway or Fashionpass. Make sure to reserve your dresses with time to spare. I’ve noticed the most popular styles are often booked months in advance.

It’s been a while since I did a style post! Sorry for being MIA on the #ootd front – I’ve been trying to incorporate some lifestyle and wellness posts into the mix. What do you guys think so far? Yay or nay?! Anyway, I thought it would be a good time to do a little refresh on the topic of what to wear to a wedding. You’d be surprised how often people have questions about what to wear to a wedding!

Now, let’s talk about what to wear to a summer wedding.

First, let’s break down the different dress codes and what they mean.

Black Tie

Think very formal dress code. You want to wear something dressy – a floor length gown is usually the most appropriate, although some high low styles may work as well. Black tie doesn’t mean boring, though! You do not have to wear a long black dress – you can certainly add in colors and prints! If you’re not sure, always ask the bride or err on the side of being conservative.

For men, a tuxedo is required.

Black Tie Optional

Similar to black tie, but slightly less formal. A long dress is still appropriate, but you’ll likely be ok to wear shorter styles or a jumpsuit.

For men, a tuxedo is optional. A dressy suit will work as well.

Beach Formal

Dressy beach attire. Forego the typical beach outfit and opt for something a little nicer. A long sundress or summer dress is fine for the occasion.

Men should still opt for a suit and tie, but can choose less heavy materials such as linen.

Keep in mind you will probably be outside, so be sure to bring sunglasses and a hat or umbrella to shade you from the sun!

Dressy Casual

Lean towards cocktail attire. Dresses are appropriate, but you could also opt for a jumpsuit or a conservative two piece.

A casual suit and tie for men is appropriate.

Casual

Resist temptations to show up in jeans or sweatpants and still do your part to look nice. You don’t necessarily need to show up in a gown or suit and tie, but choose something that is comfortable but nice for the occasion. After all, you’re still a guest at someone else’s special day!

In terms of a summer wedding, I am loving brightly colored and printed maxi dresses. This yellow maxi by Arrive Clothing stopped me dead in my tracks.

Ok, I’m being a little dramatic. But HOW GORGEOUS is this color?! I know mustard is having a moment this season, but this bright yellow is so beautiful and full of sunshine!

Right away, I checked out Arrive’s entire collection and couldn’t believe how fashion forward the designs were at the price point (most items are around $100!).

Unfortunately this dress is sold out (fingers crossed it comes back in stock) – but I rounded up a bunch of other cute dresses from Arrive (seriously my new favorite brand) that would be perfect for attending a wedding! Check them out below and let me know what you think.

what to wear to a summer wedding

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer and, according to some arbitrary rule, the time when wearing all white becomes acceptable for the next few months. White is by far my favorite color to wear and always has been. I realized I haven’t posted many of my outfits on the blog recently (although if you follow me on Instagram you’ve probably already seen them!) – so I wanted to do a few spring style roundups on the blog.  Because I am all about white for summer, I am starting with some of my favorite all white pieces and looks from the past couple months.
