I’m really excited about today’s post. It’s been a while since I did a feature and interview of another blogger/influencer. I really want to bring these back! Today’s interview features my colorist, Ashleigh Marie from Carachele Salon in West Hollywood. I’ve been seeing her for over a year and not only is she super talented and savvy; she is super sweet and down to earth. Oh, and she has amazing health and beauty tips! So read on for her best hair tips and more below!

Ashleigh Marie

Introduce Yourself.

I am a colorist, extensionist and beauty blogger bouncing around from LA/NYC/ and Montreal.  I’m a born and raised LA native with an obsession to all things beauty, specifically hair.  I specialize in bright blondes, dimensional brunettes and seamless extensions that are all low maintenance requiring only a 3/4 month sessions.

How did you get into hair?

I first was introduced to color when I was six and started coloring my own hair after ogling the Victoria Secret catalogues my mom received in the mail.  After giving everyone in my family makeovers, I soon found the opportunity to attend beauty school while in high school and jumped into the program.  I earned my cosmetology license before graduating high school. It was my fascination with beauty that lead me to Beverly Hills to mentor under some of the biggest celebrity stylist.

After assisting for only 3 short years, I was promoted at Meche from assistant to senior stylist at the Tracey Cunningham Salon and eventually made my way to Carachele Salon where I slay hair and create bonds with my inspiring clients.

What’s your hair philosophy?

Less is more.  I believe processing the hair less, meaning ditching old over highlighted locks for a more dimensional, low maintenance look is better not just for your hair, but your pocket book and your time.  And time is money!  As much as I would love to see my lady’s lovely faces every 6-8 weeks, it is better to let the hair rest and let some of the root grow so you have dimension to work with.

When it comes to extensions, I install keratin bond extensions individually to match the density of your hair.  Meaning, I don’t add more hair to your hair than what it can handle to keep it healthy.  When you attach bonds that are too large for the section of hair, traction alopecia can occur where the follicle can’t handle the added weight it must support and goes dormant.  I try to get my clients to see extensions as a short term solution, to look at what the underlying cause for the hair loss is.  Most of my clients actually transition out of regular extension use to growing their own real hair and kicking them all together.  I don’t believe in long term use, and I really pride myself in being a stylist who cares for the health of your hair and for you as a person.

What advice would you give to girls that don’t live in LA on how to find a colorist and take care of your hair?

So we are lucky to live in LA where most of the top colorist live, but if you don’t live in LA, I would suggest to do your research. Instagram is a great tool to find a stylist with work you love and I would search hashtags in your area to do so. Something like #chicagohair #sfhairstyist #seattlehaircolor to find someone local, but be aware of IG’s who’s photos look filtered.  I never filter any of my photos on IG because I am selling color and tone that are altered when a filter is add and I believe doing so is false advertising.  Go with someone who seems genuine and the photos look real.

I recommend to all my clients to take supplements and have a diet high in the vitamins and nutrients to feed your hair.  This can be a multivitamin or eating a healthy diet to a hair pill, either way it’s about consistency and having strong hair start from the inside.

What are your favorite hair products and why?
Also maintaining healthy hair by using sulphate free shampoo, and a good hair mask for moisture is essential.  I don’t recommend too many products but I do love Oribe, Amika and Virtue.  Making sure your irons for styling are below 380 is a big tip to not damaging your hair and keeping it healthy, anything passed this temperature is burning your hair.  Turn it down girl!

How do you stay healthy?

I am a big believer in the philosophy that beauty starts from within.  Meaning mind, body and soul are connected and will radiate outward.

So at the top of the health pyramid is the mind, so I like to keep my mind sharp by having a balance between work and life as well as a career that is fulfilling my sense of purpose.  I also like to read at night and wind down turning off my phone once I hit the shower and really see it as a spa experience to pamper myself and read a good book before going to bed.  Good sleep is essential and I get a minimum  of 8 hours a night in a cold, dark room.  I also go to therapy regularly, which I have been doing for 8 years.

I really feel like when you are at peace mentally you have such a positive energy that really looks beautiful.

My body I keep sharp by starting with a big jug of lemon water I put on my nightstand the night before and finish before I am allowed to look at my phone.  I try to work out first thing in the morning, fasted and usually about 6/7 am.  I like circuit training classes, pilates, yoga; gym workouts 5 days a week.  I try to eat a low carb paleo diet 80% of the time with 3 cheat meals a week approximately unless I am on vacation.  I like to ensure I am fueling my body with a variety of nutrients; but I find that organic whole foods, and protein works best for me.

As far as my soul I try to do as much as I can for others and practice kindness.  I think disconnecting from phones and connecting with others and serving them is what life is about.  I find that dancing, going for a hike, and meditating really revives my spirit.

Today’s post is all about a subject that is very, very important to me, and is written in partnership with OLLY. As always, all opinions are my own. The topic of today: SLEEP! I’ve written about sleep before and why it’s so important for you. Long story short, it impacts and improves pretty much every area in our lives – mental, physical, emotional. It’s called “beauty sleep” for a reason! When you sleep enough you are restoring your body and giving it the energy it needs to function at its best.

Sleep repairs your body from workouts, improves your skin and appearance, helps maintain your appetite and weight, improves our brain function and concentration, and enhances your mood… I could go on and on about sleep. The problem is, getting enough sleep is something I struggle with at times. Between work and travel I don’t always get the recommended 7-8 hours. Truthfully I often only get 5 or 6 hours of sleep a night – which is a terrible habit and something I do not recommend!

With that said, I have started implementing a nighttime routine to force myself to be more conscious of how I spend my evenings and prepare for bedtime. Here’s what it entails:

+ Eliminate Devices

It’s easy to lay in bed, scrolling through your Instagram feed and getting sucked into the rabbit hole that is social media. If you struggle with getting enough sleep, eliminating devices at least one hour before you go to bed is a must. It helps your mind begin to unwind and settle down – if you have thoughts racing through your head all night it is much harder to fall asleep!

+ Skincare Routine

For me, having a set skincare routine is incredibly therapeutic and calming. I love going through the process of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing before bed. A few times a week I will try a new mask as well.

+ Read

Instead of being on my laptop or phone before bed, I have been reaching for a book. I’m still trying to reach my goal of reading 30 books by the end of the year (!!) and I have found that reading is more enjoyable and helps me fall asleep faster.

+ Journal

Getting into the habit of journaling is still new to me. I don’t always know what to write about, but even 5 or 10 minutes help me feel more centered. Also, knowing I will have something to look back on and reflect in a few years is incredibly motivating!

+ OLLY – Beauty Sleep

The very last thing I do before bed is take an OLLY gummy. Melatonin affects everyone differently, but I found these gummies to be more gentle than others I have tried. It helps me fall asleep (and stay asleep), but I don’t have crazy dreams or wake up groggy the way I do after other supplements I’ve tried.

We all have crazy workdays! I have to admit it can be difficult to truly “unwind” after a long day of work and staring at a screen. For me, the last thing I want to do is stare at a screen more or have to be “on” – hence why the frequency of blog posts has come to a halt over the past month. In many ways taking a digital detox has been great for my mental health and attention span. But I continue to always look for more ways to unwind and clear my mind after work. Here are some suggestions I received from close friends and loved ones that I have been taking to heart; and actually helping me relax after work.

How to Relax After Work

Journal

Maybe it’s the fact that I’m getting closer to 30 and my memory isn’t as good as it used to be. But journaling has become a much larger part of my daily routine. I recently read and loved Michelle Obama’s book. I heard from a friend that one of the reasons her book was so vivid and fantastic is because she has kept avid, detailed journals for most of her life. Although my life isn’t nearly as exciting, I’d like to think that there are some nuggets in there that I will like to pass down in the future. For those of you who journal more regularly, do you prefer digital or paper?

Read

I shared my winter reading list back in January along with a lofty goal of 30 books read by the end of the year. I actually made decent progress on the list but still have a long way to go before I hit my goal for the end of the year! Reading is something I find so therapeutic. It brings me a lot of joy! So I am really trying to make a point of making it more of a habit than an afterthought. Any tips or suggestions for incorporating more reading into your everyday life? If only I could spend the two hours a day I spend in the car driving to and from work reading. (Yes, I’ve tried audiobooks. No, I do not like them as much as reading).

Turn off devices

Another lofty goal but one that my boyfriend and I have made a joint decision around. It can be tough to do given the nature of both of our jobs, but our goal is as little time on devices as possible once we are done for the day. In this sense I feel fortunate my job is not a full time blogger. I don’t actually *have* to be on social media all day long.

Catch up with friends

Between work and managing a blog I’ll be the first to confess, my personal life more often than not goes to the wayside. Work/life balance is a challenge for everyone, but there really is nothing more relaxing than catching up with a good friend over a drink or good meal. The older I get, the more I value true, genuine friendships (and recognize how difficult good friends are to find!) and recognize the importance of keeping in touch with and cultivating relationships that are important to you. Like all things worth having, good friendships require work and effort (from both parties!).

Go to a yoga class

Honestly, I love a good relaxing yoga class. I don’t mean a crazy yoga sculpt or vinyasa class (although I do love those as well!). But a yin or restorative yoga class. I used to be obsessed with hot vinyasa yoga and yoga sculpt, but these days I’m all about a slower pace and more sustainable workout routine. Also, the idea of doing yoga with blocks and blankets is more appealing than chaturangas after a long day of work. I also have aspirations to meditate more, but view yoga as an appropriate substitute as well. The combination of restorative yoga + meditation does wonders for relieving stress.

Create a skincare routine

Light a candle (I’m a sucker for Diptyque candles even if you are literally burning money). Put your products to work! More often than not, I get lazy and just wash my face and slap on night cream. But I find the process of creating a spa like atmosphere, making a cup of sleepy time tea, and actually following my multi step skincare routine to be incredibly relaxing. The perfect way to get ready for bed.

How do you like to relax after work?

Twice a year, Sephora holds a massive sale on everything on its site. If you’re strategic about when you make your purchases, you can get all of your beauty needs at a discount during these sales. I always make a point to stock up on the essentials during the sale, and will usually pick up a couple new items as well that I’ve had my eye on. If you’re VIB Rouge, you get 20% off of everything on the site. VIB members get 15% off, and Beauty Insiders (all you have to do is make an account!) get 10% off.

Here’s what I have in my cart for when the sale goes live (since I’m VIB, I get access from May 2 – May 6).

What I want from Sephora Sale

+ Biossane Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil

This has been on my to purchase list for skincare for quite some time, I’ll definitely be picking this up during the sale and will report back on how it is!

+ Erno Laszlo Sleep Mask

My girlfriends rave about this sleep mask but I couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger due to the price, but it’s in my shopping cart!

+ Supergoop Daily Moisturizer

I received a sample of this a few months ago and love this for an easy, everyday moisturizer. I like to keep some in my suitcase for when I travel.

+ Drunk Elephant Marula Oil

One of my favorite skincare products that I cannot live without. I highly recommend stocking up on Drunk Elephant in general during the sale – every product I’ve tried from them has worked so well on my skin. You’re limited to only 3 Drunk Elephant products during the sale (that’s how popular they are!) so either stock up on your go-tos or do some research on a new product you’ve been looking to try.

+ Beauty Blender

I don’t know how I ever did my makeup without a beauty blender. I always keep an extra one on hand, and typically stock up on these during the twice a year sale.

+ Fenty Bronzer

I’ve heard great things about Rihanna’s makeup line, with summer on the horizon now is a good time to stock up on bronzer.

+ Olaplex

If you have colored hair this is an absolute must. It keeps your hair strong and healthy even after multiple trips to the salon.

+ Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

It’s pricey for a foundation, but it is honestly worth it. The finish photographs so well (I wear it during most of my shoots) and it doesn’t clog your pores or cause breakouts.

+ Fresh Rose Sleeping Mask

Clearly I am on a sleep mask kick, but if you have dry skin like me you will find that wearing a mask at night helps so much and there’s no better feeling than waking up with baby soft skin. Trust me on this one!

+ Drunk Elephant Slaai Makeup-Melting Butter Cleanser

Drunk Elephant’s latest product release that I’ve been curious to try.

I’ll stop before my shopping cart makes me automatically qualify for VIB Rouge… Happy shopping!!

Festival season is rapidly approaching, and I’m sure many of you are thinking about what to wear and pack. This year, I’ve partnered with Pantene to show why their new Festival Hair Kit is an essential for any girl this festival season. Between all of the heat styling, tight braids, teasing, and coloring, hair can become extremely damaged. Proper haircare before, during, and after the festival can keep hair moisturized and healthy.

As someone who generally tries to avoid overly heat-styling my hair and going as long as possible in between washes to maintain my hair color, weekend-long festivals can be incredibly damaging to my hair. I tried out the new limited-edition, portable Pantene Festival Hair Kit to see how I could incorporate it into my routine. The kit includes everything you need to keep you going all weekend long – Pantene’s Dry Shampoo, Airspray (alcohol-free hairspray), one ampoule of the new Intense Rescue Shots, 1 On-the-Go Frizz Iron, and 2 Nourishing Mask sachets. Basically, all of the essentials.

How to Use the Festival Hair Kit to Rescue, Reset, and Nourish Your Hair

Pre Festival

Whatever your go-to look is, you’ll want to keep it going from day to night. After styling my hair, I love Pantene’s “brushable” Airspray because it doesn’t include hair-drying alcohols, but still provides a lasting, flexible hold that keeps your style strong. Generally, I wear my hair in loose waves, but over the course of the weekend, I like to add a braid or a textured pony as my hair becomes more naturally textured (aka dirty). Spray evenly on dry, styled hair for a silky, finished look. Also, to maximize the days in between hair washes (which I am convinced is better for you anyway!), use Pantene’s Dry Shampoo for volume. Remember to spray at the roots, or wherever refreshment is needed most. Massage thoroughly with fingertips.

Pantene’s Dry Shampoo | by The Luxi Look

During the Festival

A little trick I picked up a few years ago is to keep dry shampoo in your bag, wherever you go. Pantene’s Dry Shampoo refreshes your look by absorbing oils and instantly refreshing hair for fresh and clean second or third day ‘do! You will never see me with a mini bag, how else am I supposed to carry all of the essentials? After being in the sun or dancing all day at the festival, you WILL sweat and your hair will most likely need a touch up. Spray Pantene’s Dry Shampoo generously throughout your hair to freshen up your look and add texture.

Also, I tried Pantene’s On-the-Go Frizz Iron, which is the fourth item included in the kit. It is a heatless “iron” you can use to smooth away any frizz and fly aways. Directly apply it to your hair, like a traditional flat iron, and glide from top to bottom, to fight frizz. It’s a compact product, and another essential to keep in your festival bag.

Pantene Intense Rescue Shots

After the Festival

After multiple days of styling, you will most likely need a break from heat. Ditch the blow-dryer and hot tools and opt for a little hair R&R. This is where a super hydrating, nourishing hair mask comes in play. Also, use the Pantene Intense Rescue Shots and Nourishing Mask sachets to repair and moisturize your dry strands. Your hair will thank you.

Use the Intense Rescue Shots after washing with shampoo – just apply onto damp hair and massage from root to tip, targeting areas that see the most damage. Leave in for 30 seconds, then rinse for 30 seconds. It’s that easy!

Pantene’s Nourishing Mask sachets are ideal for an instant hydration boost. While in the shower, after shampooing, place a half dollar amount inside the hands, rub together and comb into hair. Leave on for 5-7 minutes, or longer if desired, then rinse thoroughly.

Haircare doesn’t have to be complicated or require carrying around tons of heavy products. All you need is Pantene’s easy, compact Pantene Festival Hair Kit and you’re good to go! Order yours on Amazon to get it conveniently delivered to your doorstep. It’s also available for Prime Shipping!

This post was written in partnership with Pantene. As always, all opinions are my own.
