My Winter Reading List

This year, I set a goal for myself to read 30 books. Ambitious, I know. I figure between a lot of cross country flights, quiet weekends away here and there, and a beach vacation or two, I should be able to tackle this number. I’m not big on new year resolutions. But “reading more” seems to be at the top of my list every year. I’ll post more throughout the year on my IG stories and my blog, but I’d love to hear if you have any book recommendations as well. The start the year off, I reached out to several friends and compiled a list of almost 20 books I wanted to read. It’s a good mix of fiction and non-fiction, thought-provoking novels and lazy beach reads.

What’s on your reading list??

xx

It seems like every week there are new skincare and makeup launches, at this point it’s too difficult to keep track of what the latest and greatest in skincare is. Not to mention the conflicting information you read on the internet, and the bevy of maybe not-so-honest reviews all over social media. One brand that has managed to cut through the noise over the past few years (in my opinion) is Drunk Elephant. I received samples of some of their products and loved them so much, I’ve repurchased all of them. I try and review a LOT of skincare lines and products, but Drunk Elephant has quickly risen to the top of my list, and for good reason.

+ Clean skincare.

This is what Sephora has to say about the brand:

Drunk Elephant is committed to using only ingredients that either directly benefit the skin’s health or support the integrity and effectiveness of their formulations. They never take into account an ingredient’s synthetic or natural status, but instead choose based on its biocompatibility. You won’t find what Drunk Elephant calls the “Suspicious 6” in their products (essential oils, drying alcohols, silicones, chemical screens, fragrance/dyes, and SLS,) making them, in their opinion, appropriate for all skin. They believe that these six ubiquitous ingredients are at the root of almost every skin issue we see. When formulating the products, they focus on pH levels and safety, always making sure that the active ingredients are at efficacious levels. This is the Drunk Elephant difference.

We think a lot about what goes into our products, but rarely do we think about what is excluded. I will admit that using Drunk Elephant has made me more confident in purchasing clean beauty products, as well as a more conscious beauty consumer overall.

+ Works on every skin type.

Gone are the days of purchasing products for your skin type. Drunk Elephant founder, Tiffany Masterson, believes that every product in the line should work with every skin type – read her interview here.

+ The products WORK!

I haven’t tried every Drunk Elephant product (yet), but these are the ones I’ve been using consistently for the last 6 months and have made a noticeable difference in my skin.

Virgin Marula Luxury Oil

My favorite product, I loved this so much I bought an extra so I could have one in my bathroom and the other in my gym bag. I have dry skin so I am all about oils, but I have even heard from girls with oilier skin that this product is a godsend. It’s perfect for winter months to help give your skin a much needed moisture boost as well as a natural glow. I try not to wear foundation everyday, so this marula oil has been my go to when I want to revive tired or dull skin. It also turns any foundation into a dewier version when you mix a couple drops in!

Protini Polypeptide Cream

This is a product that I grew to love. I love how lightweight the cream is, yet it packs a punch. It’s become my go to daytime cream – the best part about Drunk Elephant products is you don’t have to layer them, in fact they encourage you to mix them together. I love mixing this with a serum and the marula oil.

T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum

Can be harsh at first if you aren’t used to using a product with AHA/BHA, I use this every other night and it helps exfoliate and clear your skin while you sleep. Definitely recommend incorporating one of these into your nighttime regime as you get older.

C-Tango Multivitamin Eye Cream

I’m not an eye cream person, in the sense that I don’t really understand what they do or see a difference. But I do love this one, I can feel it brightening and moisturizing the delicate skin around my eyes, which is always a pro in my book.

T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial

I was initially worried this would be way too harsh on my skin, turns out I LOVE it. It’s a once a week, 20 minute mask that when rinsed off, leaves you with baby soft skin. It sounded too good to be true, but I haven’t found it to be too drying or harsh at all. Slather on marula oil and a hydrating serum after, and you won’t need to wear makeup for several days.

B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum

This is recommended by Drunk Elephant as the hydrating serum to use after Babyfacial. Again, my skin will drink up all the hydration it can get. This also works well in the morning (protini cream + marula oil + B-Hydra is my skincare cocktail of choice).

Lippe Balm

It’s moisturizing and nice, but honestly there are so many cheaper lip balms on the market that do the same thing. I won’t repurchase once I use my sample.

I’m also dying to try their new retinol cream, vitamin C serum, and tinted sunscreen. Will update this review once I do!

Drunk Elephant Skincare Products:

Now the downside is the products are pricey… and a huge part of their marketing/branding insists you have to use the entire suite of products to get the best results. Um, that’s almost $1000!! There are certainly other products out there that may be better for your skin and come at a lower price point, but it takes some time and a lot of trial and error. Skincare is highly personal, I know for me some of my must have products can be found at the drug store and others are a little more than I would like to spend. But hey, you wear your face everyday and I’d rather spend my money on prevention than Botox.

If you’re interested in trying out Drunk Elephant, this sample set from Sephora is a great way to dip your toe into the water without blowing an entire paycheck. Overall, I’d say the products are worth the hype – I’ve recommended them to a ton of people (with vastly different skin than me) and they’ve all raved about the line.

Have you tried Drunk Elephant? xx

Today I want to dive into the topic of sunflower lecithin. Have you heard of it? Maybe you’ve heard the word lecithin at the least? I promise it’s more fun than it sounds! It’s a fairly well-known term used to describe naturally occurring tissues, both in the body and in plants, made of fatty acids. Although the body produces it, it needs additional amounts for optimal health. This is why it’s made into a supplement from various foods, most commonly soybeans. Today, though, I want to focus on sunflower lecithin specifically.

Although the benefits are virtually the same, the main difference between consuming sunflower lecithin and soybean lecithin is the extraction process. Those that are avoiding genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, which are very common with soybeans, tend to prefer sunflower lecithin. Chemicals can also be used during the harvest of lecithin from soybeans because it is more difficult to extract the lecithin from a soybean versus a sunflower seed. Definitely sounds like sunflower lecithin is the way to go (and I haven’t even gotten into the benefits yet)!

To dive a little deeper into what sunflower lecithin actually is before explaining its alleged benefits, I did some research. It’s slightly dense but super interesting! Basically, lecithin is a substance found within tissues that acts as an emulsifier. It is beneficial from a health perspective because it’s a grouping of phospholipids containing choline (a “vitamin-like essential nutrient”), which processes fat, cholesterol and helps maintain cell function.

OK! Now that we have some background info, let’s get to the benefits, because that’s what we’re all here for right?

Benefits of sunflower lecithin

Lowers cholesterol

This is definitely one of the most talked about health benefits of lecithin. How I understand it is, in the bloodstream, there is good cholesterol and bad. The properties of lecithin allow it to work to balance these out, which can ultimately improve your heart health according to some studies. This means your chance of heart attack and stroke is reduced, along with the need for long-term prescriptions for cholesterol management.

Brain function

According to this study, there is a positive link between cognitive function and lecithin intake. The phospholipids presented in lecithin, specifically choline, can increase or even repair neurological damage. It’s also used to treat and help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. So this means taking a lecithin supplement daily could really improve your brain health. Yes please!

Breastfeeding

If you’re a breastfeeding mama that has struggled with clogged ducts, The Canadian Breastfeeding Foundation conducted a study that showed lecithin could potentially prevent the clogging of ducts while breastfeeding. It recommends taking a lecithin supplement, which essentially thins the milk slightly, along with practicing other remedies like massaging and using warm compresses to reduce clogs. I’m obviously not here yet, but keeping this in mind for the future.

Digestion

Because lecithin has “emulsifying qualities,” according to this study, it can help in easing ulcerative colitis. It essentially helps build the mucus layer in your intestine, which in turn protects the delicate lining of the digestive system. This can also be beneficial for those that suffer from irritable bowel syndrome. You may want to consult a doctor on this, though, because if taken too frequently lecithin could actually have adverse effects on the gastrointestinal system.

Liver and gallbladder health

The choline in lecithin helps to dissolve excess fats, which is very helpful for good liver health. When the liver becomes overloaded with fats and tries to process too many at a time, you may be at risk for liver disease. Taking lecithin can help regulate this and keep your liver and gallbladder in good shape.

Moisturizes skin

Some people actually apply lecithin directly onto their skin and use it as a moisturizer (more on use and application below). Why? Lecithin is actually used as an ingredient in a lot of skincare products because it can add a creamy texture. It’s also been noted that if you use lecithin alone and apply it directly to the skin it can help with acne and eczema. Perfect for summer skin!

Immune system

Thanks to two of the other phospholipids found in lecithin (outside of choline), phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylethanolamine, it’s loaded with antioxidants. This means lecithin can help speed up your recovery and prevent illnesses and infections from the beginning. It also adds some anti-aging benefits, which is never a bad thing.

Types of sunflower lecithin and where to buy it

Sunflower lecithin comes in a couple different forms, namely liquid and powder. The liquid version is most commonly put into a capsule that you can swallow as part of a regular supplement routine. Although who’s to say you can’t use the liquid directly on your skin like mentioned above.

The powder form is most commonly mixed into coffees, smoothies, shakes, etc.. Really anything that would benefit from lecithin’s creamy texture. If you want to give a lecithin smoothie a try, this recipe sounds delicious!

Superfood Chocolate Smoothie

Adapted from Holistic Wellness

1 cups coconut milk

1 tbsp sunflower lecithin

1/2 banana

1 tbsp collagen

1 tbsp cacao powder / cocoa powder

Ice as needed

Add all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Add additional milk or ice until you reach your desired consistency. Enjoy!

Sunflower lecithin is a very interesting supplement and there’s no doubt there’s tons of information out there on the topic. Have you ever tried it out and experienced its benefits?

I’d love to hear any thoughts on the topic!

Slight confession – I am not the best at taking my vitamins. At least, I wasn’t until I tried Hum Nutrition. Taking vitamins is one of those things that I know is “good for me” (or at the very least, doesn’t hurt to do), but I have a tendency to forget. Whenever I start a new vitamin routine, I’m great about taking them for a week or so before I fall off the habit. Last month I got extremely sick for over a week – think sleep 12-14 hours a night, can hardly move or eat kind of sick.

My body just gave out and I knew I had to take better care of myself.

Since then I’ve made a huge effort not only to adjust some of my habits (particularly around adjusting stress and making sure to get enough sleep), I also started being much more diligent about getting on a regular vitamin routine. I’m not going to lie, it was the cute packaging and branding of Hum that caught my eye initially – but after a month of taking a recommended regimen of vitamins every day, I felt I had to share my experience and how – spoiler alert – positive it’s been for my health and wellbeing.

I’m all about putting in the work to feel your best, but something about taking vitamins has always felt like a bit of a shortcut or cop out to me. I knew that with my work schedule my immune system and sleep schedule would need some help – long haul flights adjusting to cross country time zones on a weekly basis definitely messes with your overall health – so I took the quick assessment on the Hum website to get recommendations for which products from Hum’s comprehensive line of vitamins were best suited for my needs and lifestyle. I picked up the products that were recommended for me, as well as a few other that a friend suggested.

My Hum Nutrition Regimen:

Uber Energy

These claim to help support consistent energy through adrenal strength. What I will say is taking these every day allowed me to cut down on caffeine and feel more balanced overall. Would definitely take these again.

Flatter Me

Supposedly these contain digestive enzymes that help you break down some less than good for you foods (read: sugar, carbs, dairy, etc…) and help you debloat. I didn’t notice too much of a difference taking these, but other reviews online are stellar. I also take a regular probiotic, which may already take care of a lot of my digestive issues.

Air Patrol

I took these as a preventative measure against getting sick since I was traveling so much at the time. It saved me from having to take too many vitamin C supplements and I haven’t been sick (knock on wood) since, despite numerous late nights and cross country flights.

Moody Bird

Probably one of my favorite supplements I added to my routine. After tracking my cycle for the past few months (highly recommend the “Clue” app if you haven’t checked it out already), I noticed that my mood swings and cravings would get very out of control during certain times of month. After taking Moody Bird I’ve honestly noticed a huge difference in my mood and cravings. As someone who grew up with a lot of Eastern medicine and remedies, the ingredients are definitely up my alley.

Beauty zzZz

Melatonin isn’t for everyone (have been told by multiple people that they get weird dreams or feel groggy after taking it), I personally have not had issues with it and found that it really helped calm my nerves and sleep soundly on the nights I needed it most.

Glow Sweet Glow

Not pictured because, um, they’re all gone. The little kid in me loves gummy vitamins, these are legitimately the yummiest ones I’ve ever had. I truly looked forward to eating these every day and was sad when I ran out (note to self: repurchase today!). Oh, and they’re filled with vitamin C and E – which are so good for your skin and make you GLOW!
