How to Elevate Basic Pieces

Sometimes basic is better. A closet with all the right basics is timeless, versatile, and practical. This year, my goal has been to choose high quality basics over trendy seasonal pieces, and the effort has paid off. It’s so easy to get dressed in the morning. I’m actually getting enough wear from everything I buy to justify my purchases. But basic does not have to equal boring! If you’re wondering how to keep your basics from being boring, read on to learn how to (easily) elevate basic pieces.

Must have wardrobe basics

First, you need to build your wardrobe foundation. These will be different for everyone, but I like to have a mix of classic pieces in white, black, gray, and camel. Personally I am not the biggest fan of navy, but this is a great color for basics as well. Some of the basics in my closet that have been getting a lot of wear this year include a black silk camisoledenim shorts, basic t-shirts, and black booties. These are classic pieces you can wear for multiple seasons and mix and match with trendier pieces.

Elevate Basic Pieces

The easiest step to elevate basic pieces

Just because you are wearing basic pieces doesn’t mean you can’t highlight your own style. The key to elevating basics is in how you choose to accessorize the rest of your outfit. You can either mix a basic item with a trendier piece, or elevate a simple look through your accessories. I’m a huge fan of statement pieces with basics. One of my girlfriends is the owner of a really killer accessories line called Sticks + Stones.

What would otherwise be a very simple (read: boring) outfit is instantly transformed by some well placed accessories – a statement necklace, earrings, and a studded belt. So this look is perfect for festival season or a casual weekend outing.

How do you elevate your basics? xx

Love this look so much, especially the lacy camisole! 🙂 Having good basic pieces as a foundation for your wardrobe really is key – I find myself getting so much more wear out of these essentials! <3

  3. Great share!! You are right, a statement necklace adds a statement and elevates the more basic looks when you put it on!! I love how you have styled your outfit with such lovely pieces!
